Feasting on Asphalt: The Maid Rite, Quincy, Illinois

Browsing around on Facebook this evening (as a general rule, Iadd only people I have met in person), I stumbled upon this video on You Tube from the show, Feasting on Asphalt, in which Alton Brown pays a visit to the Quincy Maid Rite.

Whenever I return to the Gem City, the Maid Rite is one of the stops on my "pilgrimage" while home. Quincyans who have moved away are often seen going in with coolers to bring a dozen or so maid rites home with them. I've also been known to do it a time or two...

What is a maid rite, you ask? Here's the classic response: it's like a sloppy joe, but without the sloppy.

They're delicious. And very greasy. So greasy that the grease soaks through the bun. And the wax paper. And the brown bag they put them in. And if you don't put the brown bag in a cooler the grease will soak through to the passenger seat of your car.

It's really a heart attack on a bun, but it's well worth it!
