BATON ROUGE, Louisiana, July 7, 2011 (LifeSiteNews.com) – Louisiana’s pro-life governor Bobby Jindal said the new abortion alternatives bill he signed into law Wednesday is proof that “creating a culture of life is more than just words.”
The News-Star reports that Jindal was in West Monroe on Wednesday to sign HB 636, known as the Signs of Hope Act, at the First Baptist Church.
The bill requires signs posted in abortion clinics that inform women they have the right not to be coerced into having an abortion, that the father must pay child support, that agencies are available to help them during and after pregnancy, and that parents seeking to adopt may be able to defray some of the costs of pregnancy.
It also requires abortion providers to inform women about alternatives to abortion and give them a link to the state’s Department of Health and Hospitals website with more information.
“Creating a culture of life is more than just words. It means we’ve got to fight to defend the lives of the most innocent and most vulnerable among us, especially unborn children,” Jindal was quoted as saying. “A civilized society is judged and will be judged by how it treats the weakest members of that society.”
Jindal said he was confident that, the more women know their legal rights, “the more they’ll choose life and alternatives to abortion.”
Despite Louisiana’s current pro-life laws, abortions killed 9,000 unborn children last year, a statistic the governor called “awfully humbling” and indicative that more work needs to be done.
Benjamin Clapper, executive director of Louisiana Right to Life, said in an email that pro-life advocates could “not agree more” with Jindal. Clapper was present at Wednesday evening’s signing ceremony.
“While we are delighted at the passage of this legislation, we will not tire until liberty and justice is given to all, both born and unborn,” he stated.
