Over on the blog of St. Anthony High School, one of the students posted the top ten Christmas songs (according to WCBS-FM):
- White Christmas -Bing Crosby
- The Chipmunk Song -The Chipmunks
- Rudolph, the Red Nosed Reindeer -Gene Autry
- I Saw Mommy Kissing Santa Claus -Jimmy Boyd
- Jingle Bell Rock -Bobby Helms
- The Christmas Song -Nat King Cole
- Snoopy's Christmas -The Royal Guardsmen
- Here Comes Santa Claus -Gene Autry
- Little Drummer Boy -Harry Simeone Chorale
- Donde Esta Santa Claus -Augie Rios
What strikes me is the lack of songs that are actually about Christmas (The Little Drummer Boy excepted). They are more Santa Claus songs than they are about the birth of the Savior.
A few of my favorite Christmas songs are, in no particular order:
- Of the Father's Love Begotten
- In the Bleak Midwinter
- The Cherry Tree Carol
- Candlelight Carol
- O Little Town of Bethlehem (it was my mother's favorite)
- God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen
- The Little Drummer Boy
- Good King Wenceslaus
- Patapan
- Ding Dong Merrily On High
- Carol of the Bells
- Fum, Fum, Fum
- Hodie, Christus Natus Est
What would you add?
Come Thou Fount of Every Blessing
ReplyDeleteHmm, never heard of Fum, Fum, Fum. Thankfully for the internet I got to heart it and then buy it.
ReplyDeleteGood list, but I would have to add the Boar's Head Carol. My mother had this on a record when I was a kid and came to love it - plus it has Latin verses.
I would also add the classic Silent Night, plus Coventry Carol, Good Christian Men rejoice, Hark The Herald Angel, I saw Three Ships, In Dulci Jublio, Lo, How a Rose E'er Blooming, O Holy Night - well you get the picture.
Even as a young atheist I loved traditional Christmas carols and always preferred those over the Winter themed ones. Loved to both hear them and sing them and it was partly my love of these Carols that lead me into the Church.
