Please, in your charity, please pray for the people of Chile affected by this morning's earthquake and those who will be affected by the generated tsunami.

  1. Hello. I didn't know of another way in which to ask a question, apart from this. Any answers from anyone will be welcome. I want to know about the doxology that follows the Pater Noster in the Novus Ordo Mass. What are its origins? I've heard that it was a Protestant appendage to the Lord's Prayer. If this is true, why then is it omitted in the ancient Extraordinary Form but included in the Ordinary?

  2. Good question, obyrna.

The answer you've heard is not correct.

The doxology you mention is technically called the "embolism", meaning addition.

It is found in the early Church and even in some manuscripts of the Gospels, though not in all nor in the majority of the texts. It is also present in the Didache, and therefore predates the Reformation by more than a millenium.

I know that it was present in the Extraordinary Form at least in the eleventh century, when the priest said it quietly.
