Request denied

The Quincy City Council voted 8-5 Monday to reject a proposal to grant local landmark status to St. Boniface Church.

The council acted after hearing emotional pleas from 10 speakers, most of whom tried to persuade aldermen to grant landmark status despite the objections of the Roman Catholic diocese, which opposed the measure.

In the end, aldermen decided not to force the designation onto the building's current owner. [more here and here]
