Many of the defenders of the current pope argue that Card. Ratzinger was just following church law; they argue that he did not have power to severely discipline abusive priests because he (and the CDF) had not been given jurisdiction over those cases until 2003. Many of those same defenders imply (or even state outright) that Card. Ratzigner had been petitioning JP2 for some time to take a stronger approach to laicize abusive priests.

One has to wonder why JP2 would not listen to his trusted advisor, Card. Ratzinger (who, by that point, had been in charge of the CDF for 20-plus years). Am I the only one to wonder whether JP2 was just incredibly stubborn on this issue, and resistant for far too long to suggestions that men who raped children must be removed from the priesthood?

I realize that JP2 was in very poor health by the late '90s; we all saw his physical decline. I also recognize that complete and utter moral perfection is not a prerequisite for sainthood. Stubborn people can become saints.

But what about a stubborn attitude on an issue of prime importance? Is that the sort of thing that the current pope's advisors are/should be examining in regard to ANY candidate for sainthood, including JP2? Canonization involves the highest standards of holiness and openness to God's will. Yes, JP2's fortitude in his physical suffering, and his overall holiness, is evident. But does stubbornness in not requiring very bad men to be removed from the priesthood prior to 2003 not count for anything in this equation? I should think it would.
